History of the Rally...
The Rally came about after in 2001 two friends were wondering what on earth to do with a slightly disheveled Fiat 126 and came up with the plan to drive it to the most ridiculous place they could think of - Mongolia. They didn't quite make it due to visa and border trouble but had such a good time that they decided to try again.
And so in 2004, 6 teams set forth on the journey taking upon 10,000 miles on unknown, 4 of the teams made it. The rally became a yearly event taking place in 2005 with 18 of the 43 teams making it to the finish line.
2006 was the year the rally really took off with 167 teams taking part and raising over ?200,000 for charity, an amount they hope to smash this year.
What is the Rally?
Rule number 1. - Your car has to be under a litre engine.
You then take said 'crap' car and aim it towards Ulaan Bataar, the capital of Mongolia, taking in about 10,000 miles as the drunk crow flies, across the worlds worst roads through countries most people haven't heard of.
The ethos behind the rally is that
the world is that little bit too safe, as someone went and discovered all
the interesting bits before we were given the opportunity to check out whet
her
the edge of the map was really the edge of the world or if in fact it was
round. And so the Adventurists give aspiring adventurers the
opportunity to get stuck in a manner of sticky situations which require wit,
charm and an endless supply of optimism
