The Challenge
Autumn 2007: We are two girls with a major dilemma... where
to sun ourselves next summer? Faliraki and Magaluf frankly seem a bit
passe and Cornwall doesn't really hold the kind of excitement we're
after. Hence began some serious overuse of that wonderful thing known as
google.
When we first stumbled across the Mongol Rally is was a bit of
a drunken joke, something to chat up hot boys with, they generally
seemed impressed! However six months on and it's now got to the stage
where we've paid a certain amount in entrance fees and told pretty much
everyone we know that we are going... and so it seems that for the sake
of our dignity, if nothing else, on the 19th July we will be leaving for
Mongolia!
Not only will we be heading for this apparently random choice of country
a quarter of the way round the world but
we actually intend to drive there in a car with about as much power as a
milk float across roads that are either terrible or nonexistent and
through countries you'd be forgiven for thinking were made up (kyrgyzstan?!).
One of us does have a geography degree but unfortunately she wont be
putting her beautifully honed map reading skills to any use as most of
the countries in question don't believe in maps, and even google earth
finds the whole area a bit overwhelming (seriously give it a go!).
Every great adventure has a purpose and we'd like to iterate that ours
is not the pursuit of a perfect tan (after all one of us is half Irish
and so simply can't). The real reason we're putting ourselves in mortal
danger is for the sake of some very good causes, which are the Mercy
Corps Mongolia and The Christina Noble Foundation, you can find out more
on the Why!?! page.
